The Alaska Legislature
is composed of two bodies: the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The House of Representatives consists of 24 Republicans and
16 Democrats. Of the forty Representatives, 8 are women
and 32 are men. The Senate consists 10 Republicans
and 10 Democrats. Of the twenty Senators, 3 are women and

A bill becomes a law by going through
an introduction, reading, referral, hearing and voting process
known as the Legislative Process. Click

When
does the Legislative session convene? adjourn?
Starting in 2008, the Legislative Session is being shortened to 90 days. The 2008 Session convenes Janurary 15th, and adjourns April 13th. In past years the
Legislative session convenes on the second Monday in January
. In the years that following
a gubernatorial election, the legislature convenes on the third
Monday in January unless that happens to fall on Martin Luther
King Jr. Day, in which case it convenes on the Tuesday after.

How do
I send a Public Opinion Message (POM)?
You may now send your own Public Opinion
Messages (POM)! Your name and address that you use needs to
be the one that is on your voter registration card. To access
the program, click here: http://www.legis.state.ak.us/poms.
If you have problems or questions, contact your local Legislative
Information Office.
To have your Legislative Information Office
send your POM, call your local LIO.
You may also fill out the Public
Opinion Message form and fax it to your local Legislative
Information Office.
