Kotzebue, located about 30 miles north of the Arctic Circle on Alaska's western coast, is named after explorer Otto von Kotzebue who explored the Northwest Passage in 1818. The city roughly 29 square miles and is home to approximately 3200 people. The LIO is open year round and is located at 373 2nd Street.

Kuspuks are the traditional dress of many parts of Alaska. The Capitol tradition of wearing kuspuks on Fridays started with Representative Mary Sattler (was Kapsner & Nelson as well when she was in office). Sen. Georgianna Lincoln was also pivotal in launching this iteration of casual Friday. Originally, Kuspuk Fridays were 'Kuspuks for Katie' as an homage to a former staffer who had lost a battle with cancer. Today, the tradition continues, honoring our mutual and unique Alaskan heritage.
